New footage has emerged of a shark lurking just offshore at Cabarita Beach, where a teenage boy was attacked days earlier, as authorities confirm the popular Far North Coast beach remains closed due to ongoing shark activity.
Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) has confirmed a bull shark, estimated to be around 2m long, was spotted on Tuesday during drone surveillance.
Jet skis and aerial patrols have been monitoring the area closely since the teen was bitten late on Sunday afternoon.
“Cabarita Beach remains closed today after more shark activity at the popular Far North Coast surfing spot,” an SLSNSW spokesperson said.
“Despite largely perfect conditions in the area for surfers, SLSNSW still advises to stay away from the beach while there is heightened activity.”
Vision of the original attack, filmed from the beach’s south headland, showed the 16-year-old swimming just metres from surfers before a large dorsal fin appeared behind him.
Seconds later, the teen was dragged underwater in a violent encounter with the predator.
Surfers and bystanders, including off-duty paramedics, pulled the boy from the water and applied a tourniquet before paramedics arrived.
He suffered significant injuries to his arm, wrist and leg, but remains in a stable condition in hospital.
Earlier footage also revealed the shark trailing the group into the shallows as they dragged the injured teen to shore, with the animal appearing to swim within metres of the sand.
Lifeguards are expected to reassess conditions later on Wednesday before deciding whether to reopen the beach.
