A man is recovering in hospital after he was assaulted during a violent home invasion in Sydney’s west, with police now probing whether the attack is linked to a nearby car fire.

Emergency services were called to a property on Abbott St in Merrylands shortly before 1.45am following reports of a break-in.

Officers were told a group of men, all wearing face coverings, forced their way inside the home and attacked a male occupant aged in his 40s.

The group fled the scene shortly after.

A neighbour to the house which was invaded, Rabia said the incident comes as a shock with the street and its residents being mostly quiet.

“I have been here for four years, and haven’t seen anything from anybody,” she said.

“Everyone’s friendly, never had any issues.”

She also confirmed the house which was invaded was home to a young family, which included parents and “a couple young boys and a couple of girls.”

Paramedics treated the man for facial injuries at the scene before transporting him to hospital for further care. No other injuries were reported.

A short time later, police were called to Elizabeth St in Granville following reports of a car on fire.

It comes after a man was assaulted and a child threatened at gunpoint during a violent home invasion in Edmondson Park early Monday morning.

Police allege a trio of balaclava-clad intruders, one armed with a firearm, forced their way into the home, assaulted a 48-year-old man and threatened a 12-year-old child before fleeing with stolen jewellery.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
