Man dies after being shot multiple times, two arrested in daylight attack at Blacktown
A 28-year-old man has been shot dead on a residential street in Sydney’s west, with two males arrested and in custody following a car pursuit which ended in a crash.
A man was assassinated in a broad daylight on a residential street on Friday, with two people arrested following a dramatic police chase.
Mal Steve, 28, died outside a home on Carinya St, Blacktown, after being shot in the neck, chest and leg just after 12pm.
As emergency services were administering first aid to Mr Seve, police carried out a high speed chase of two suspects.
Officers spotted a Mazda ute leaving the scene and initiated the pursuit when the driver allegedly ignored directives to stop. It continued until the ute crashed on Kildare Rd.
Both of the men attempted to run away, with one jumping a fence before being taken to the ground by four officers.
Police arrested the men – one in his late teens and the other in his early 20s – and took them to Blacktown Police Station.
They were being processed in the station on Friday night and it is expected they will be charged.
Investigations will focus on whether the shooting is linked to the seemingly endless spate of gangland violence that has plagued Sydney.
The brazen shooting took place just outside a suburban block where children play on the communal driveway.
Blacktown Police Area Commander, Superintendent Brendan Gorman said: “Ambulance, paramedics and police attempted first aid at the scene, however he passed away. At the same time, police identified a black Mazda ute and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit lasted for approximately five minutes and ended in a short crash.”
Witnesses said that one of the arrested men suffered cuts to the head and had a bleeding nose as he was cuffed and sat against a fence.
Even while detained, the man continued to resist and argue with police.
One of the detectives was forced to twice straighten the man’s legs and then restrain him by placing a foot on the arrested man’s legs.
Superintendent Gorman clarified that another car, a silver hatchback, which flipped upside down on Kildare Rd was not the same car the alleged shooters were in.
Tradie Ousama Hawat was working at a nearby construction site when he heard sirens and watched the 40-minute ordeal play out.
“I saw someone jump the fence and a copper just grabbed him,” he said. “The cops took him down and arrested him.”
Mr Hawat said he saw another man allegedly punch an officer in the face before running away.
“It was surprising,” he said. He did not recall hearing any gunshots.
Police hae urged anyone with dashcam footage or information about the shooting to contact them.
Investigations into the shooting are continuing.
