A coronial inquest into the Bondi Junction mass stabbing tragedy is set to begin this month, nearly a year after six people were killed during a horrifying attack inside one of Sydney’s busiest shopping centres.

The directions hearing will take place on Monday, April 7, ahead of the formal inquest which is scheduled to begin on April 28 and run for up to four weeks.

Led by the NSW State Coroner, the inquest will examine whether there were any systemic failures, particularly within the mental health system and shopping centre security protocols, that may have contributed to the deadly rampage.

On April 13 last year, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi fatally stabbed six people inside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping complex.

His victims were Dawn Singleton, 25, Ashlee Good, 38, Pikria Darchia, 55, Jade Young, 47, Yixuan Cheng, 27 and Faraz Tahir, 30.

The attack came to a halt when NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott shot and killed Cauchi inside the centre.

The inquest will be primarily held in open court, allowing members of the public to attend.

Key parts of the hearing, including the opening address by Counsel Assisting and the coroner’s findings, will also be live streamed.

More to come.
