Bondi attack that killed 16 demands answers on police and security failings
Authorities face mounting pressure to answer 10 critical questions about security failures after the Bondi Beach terrorist attack left 16 dead during a Hanukkah event.
As Australia reels from the Bondi Beach terrorist attack that left 16 dead and many more wounded, authorities need to urgently answer questions about just how and what happened.
Politicians, police, and security officials will point to the inevitable flurry of inquiries that will occur.
But these 10 questions – among many others – deserve urgent attention and answers if Australians are to remain confident that those charged with keeping us safe are.
1. What risk assessment was done with local NSW police prior to the Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, particularly given ASIO listed the nation’s terror threat level as “probable”?
2. Why was the father allowed to hold six firearms when his son was once assessed as a threat by counter-terrorism police?
3. Were there any warnings that this would occur?
4. Why were there not more police on hand at the event, and what rules of engagement were they operating under once the shooting started?
5. What was the response time of the police?
6. Were police left inadequately armed with general duties side-arms instead of having access to long rifles?
7. Where did the guns come from? Were they legal? Were they or any gun license associated with them obtained under false pretences?
8. Were the shooters born in Australia? If they came to Australia from overseas, under what program?
9. What was the ideology of the shooters? Were they radicalised, and if so, by whom?
10. How can we be sure this won’t happen again?
