RAAF Base Tindal is on track to receiving two uncrewed air systems later this year, with the US defence company responsible for managing the assets recently confirming the pair are undergoing their final tests overseas.
Last month, Northrop Grumman Corporation announced two MQ-4C Tritons, destined for the Territory, had successfully passed a series of tests at the company’s Palmdale facility in California.
Capable of high-altitude and long-endurance, the Tritons are expected to enhance reconnaissance and surveillance operations along Australia’s northern border.
In August 2024, Defence Minister Richard Marles announced four “exquisite” Tritons would be procured under $2.5 billion program, with RAAF Base Tindal to house the quad.
At the time, Mr Marles said he expected two Tritons to be delivered in late 2025, with the first drone having already arrived in Katherine.
Now, Mr Marles’ expectations could soon be met, with Northrop Grumman confirming the second and third Tritons would be sent to Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Maryland, where they will undergo calibration testing.
Once complete, the company said it would deliver the promised assets into the hands of RAAF.
The fourth Triton will be delivered in 2026.
While all four Tritons will be housed at RAAF Base Tindal with a view to maximising the Tritons’ northern reach, it is understood the assets will be piloted by members of No. 9 Squadron, located at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.
As of 2025, only the United States and Australia operate the Triton.
