If I travel from a hotspot and arrive in the Northern Territory before July 17, will I still need to undertake mandatory supervised quarantine?

No, mandatory self-quarantine applies to everyone arriving from a hotspot until 17 July, however if you breach quarantine you will be placed in mandatory supervised quarantine until the end of your quarantine period.

Will I have to pay if I’m forced into supervised quarantine?

Yes, the cost of mandatory supervised quarantine will be payable by the traveller. $2500 is the cost of 14 days quarantine. If you arrive before 17 July and you are moved from self-quarantine to mandatory supervised quarantine, you will pay the cost of each day you are in mandatory supervised quarantine.

Can I leave a hotspot to travel to the Northern Territory?

You shouldn’t be leaving a hotspot. If you do and you reach the Northern Territory on or after 17 July you will be placed in mandatory supervised quarantine for 14 days at a cost to you of $2500 per person.

What do I need to do to declare if I am coming from a hotspot area?

At your entry point to the Northern Territory, you will be asked to complete a Border Arrival Form. You will need to declare what areas you have travelled from and through and that you do not have coronavirus symptoms. There may be other personal information required.

Do penalties apply for not declaring travel from a hotspot?

If you are found to have provided misleading information or to have lied on your arrival form you face a possible prison term of up to three years. You may also be currently fined $1,106 for contravening the CHO Directions.

Travelling from a hotspot, can I apply for an exemption to the mandatory supervised quarantine?

No, there will be no exemptions given and no process for applying for an exemption if you are coming to the Northern Territory from a hotspot.

I’m a contractor and I need to come back to the NT for work, does this apply to me?

If you have been in a hotspot there will be no exemptions given and no process for applying for an exemption for entry into the Northern Territory.

I’m a FIFO worker and I need to come back to the NT for work, does this apply to me?

If you have been in a hotspot there will be no exemptions given and no process for applying for an exemption for entry to the Northern Territory.

If I’m already in self-quarantine, do I have to stay beyond 17 July to finish my 14 days?

No, you can exit self-quarantine on 17 July unless you have been in a hotspot. If you have been in a hotspot you will need to finish the 14 days.

If I’ve been travelling, how do I know if where I have been is a current hotspot?

It is your responsibility to know. Current hotspots can be found here.

Where are the current hotspots?

As of July 9 at 11am, all of Victoria is a known hotspot. There are no other hotspots around the nation.

What if I had to fly through Victoria to get to the NT? Does that mean I’m coming from a hotspot?

A person is taken not to have been in a COVID-19 hotspot if the person has been in a COVID-19 hotspot only in one or more of the following circumstances:

a) the person travelled through the hotspot in or on a motor vehicle, public transport or a bicycle and did not leave the vehicle, disembark the public transport or dismount the bicycle while in the hotspot;

b) the person was only at an airport located in a hotspot;

c) the person travelled through the hotspot by motor vehicle, public transport or bicycle directly to or from an airport located in a hotspot and did not leave the vehicle, disembark the public transport or dismount the bicycle while in the hotspot expect to enter the airport.
