CHARLES Darwin University librarians have been living in fear of losing their jobs for several months before the proposed cuts were leaked, claims a relative of one of the staffers.
The relative, who did not want to be named, said the cuts were mainly frontline staff.
‘For months now the staff at CDU were aware they were in trouble financially, even a year ago they knew they were in trouble,” he said.

“Two, maybe three months ago they were made aware jobs would be lost in the library and from what I can gather all positions except for management have been terminated.
“Everybody’s positions were no longer there and all staff would have to reapply for their positions and predominantly at lower rates or lower levels.”
He claimed about seven new positions would be open to fired staff.
“You can imagine the angst and stress this is causing but is predominantly people that deal with students frontline,” he said.
“You can’t run any organisation by management. You have to have people down on the ground floor.”
In September it was revealed 13 library jobs were on the line at CDU’s Darwin and Alice Springs campuses.
The proposed cuts could potentially save the university more than $900,000 a year.
A CDU spokeswoman confirmed fired staff would be able to reapply for jobs, however did not disclose how many positions would be available and at what salary.

“The proposed new and revised positions are located across the library operations and not just frontline staff,” she said.
“The library change proposal focuses on ensuring that the skills and capabilities of staff constitute best practice in library service delivery for researchers and academics, students, professional staff and the broader communities with whom we interact.
“Those whose positions are proposed to cease will have the opportunity to apply for newly created positions.”
