Woman dies after being ‘struck by number of cars’ on Stuart Hwy in Darwin

One of the women who hit a pedestrian on the Stuart Hwy had cannabis in her system while another driver who also hit the pedestrian failed a roadside saliva indication drug test, police say.

UPDATED: ONE of the women who hit a pedestrian on the Stuart Hwy had cannabis in her system, police say.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the woman was “struck by several vehicles in quick succession on a dimly lit section of the road”.

All three drivers stopped as lawfully required and awaited police.

Police said two drivers failed roadside saliva indication drug tests and were subsequently arrested for confirmation drug testing.

A 24-year-old female driver was later confirmed to have cannabis within her system and immediately suspended from driving for 24 hours.

She was released from custody pending further investigation.

Major Crash detectives are appealing for any witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation.

“The pedestrian was struck in the inbound lanes of Stuart Highway in Pinelands, near the turn offs to McKinnon Road on the left and Mander Road on the right,” DSSgt Lindner said.

“We are appealing to all motorists travelling through Pinelands around 7.30pm, who saw either the crash or the female pedestrian prior to the crash. She is described as middle-aged, indigenous and wearing a brightly-patterned dress. Anyone who travelled through the area with dash-cam footage between 7pm and 7.45pm is urged to contact police on 131 444.”

UPDATE 6.20am: TRAFFIC has reopened on the Stuart Hwy in Pinelands this morning after a woman tragically died when she was struck by a number of cars overnight.

Northern Watch Commander Wayne O’Niell said three drivers were currently assisting police with inquiries.

“At about 7.30pm [on Wednesday] a pedestrian was struck by a number of cars on the Stuart Hwy at Pinelands.

“We don’t know the identity of that female at this point in time.

“We have three drivers of vehicles who are assisting police in their inquiries.

“We are still investigating what actually went on and what’s actually happened, who struck what.

“Investigations are ongoing with major crash unit.”

He said the Stuart Hwy reopened to traffic around 5am on Thursday.

“There should be a good flow of traffic through there today so there shouldn’t be any impeding that.”

EARLIER: A WOMAN has tragically died in a crash along the Stuart Hwy in Pinelands on Wednesday evening.

According to a post on the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services Facebook at 10.30pm, she was struck by a vehicle. Major Crash Detectives are at the scene investigating.

A road closure is currently in place for the inbound lanes between Foundation Rd and the Palmerston overpass.

It is not known when the roads will be open, with motorists urged to use Tiger Brennan Dr as an alternate route.
