Crocs outta control: The craziest NT beasts

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman has been left with puncture wounds in her leg after a crocodile clamped its jaws on her while she was swimming in a Top End lagoon.

NT Police confirmed the woman was attacked by a croc while swimming in a lagoon on Vanderlin Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria at around 3pm on Sunday.

She was bitten by the crocodile on her lower right leg and received several puncture wounds. It’s understood the woman is a local resident.

She was transported to King Ash Bay boat ramp, where she was met by clinic staff and transported to the Borroloola Primary Health Care Centre at about 5.30pm.

She was treated for leg abrasions at the health centre and has since been discharged.

It comes after a massive croc was spotted just metres away from the King Ash Bay boat ramp on Sunday.

Ash Garner from the King Ash Bay Lodge captured drone footage of the 4m beast.

“With visitors starting to arrive, it’s a timely reminder to be Crocwise,” he said.

“These pictures are from (Sunday) afternoon at the King Ash Bay boat ramp so we want to urge people to be careful when launching and retrieving boats.”

“We do get a lot of interstate tourists and visitors, so we’re trying to get the message out there.

“Just because it’s freshwater and you can’t always see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.”

HOT NEW DEAL: Read everything for 28 days for just $1

NT Parks and Wildlife rangers have warned that crocs have recently become mobile due to the heavy rains.

The croc management team have already captured at least 50 crocodiles this year.

You should always be aware of the risk of a saltwater crocodile attack in all Top End waterways.
