NEURON has added third party liability insurance to its $20 million public liability and personal accident insurance cover, a first of its kind for eScooters and eBikes.

The third party liability coverage, which has already been implemented, goes beyond what is required by law.

Neuron Mobility chief executive Zachary Wang said the insurance was the first of its kind applicable to rental eScooters in Australia and New Zealand.

“We have a long history of industry leadership, particularly when it comes to safety, so it’s great to keep ahead of the game by protecting both our riders and the public with this insurance,” Mr Wang said.

“We are the only rental e-Scooter company to offer a full suite of rider liability cover in Australia and New Zealand.”

Mr Wang said the insurance demonstrated Neuron’s continued commitment to operating in a safe and responsible way.

“Although there are very few e-Scooter incidents involving third parties, we want to give our riders, and the community as a whole, added peace of mind and security,” he said.

“Our e-Scooters are packed with cutting-edge safety features and we know from our existing operations around Australia and New Zealand that riders really appreciate this.”

In partnering with Australian road safety charity Brake and the Australian Road Safety Foundation, Neuron was guided into best practices for approaching and applying safety.

Brake director Caroline Perry said the third party insurance would help protect riders and the wider communities from mishaps on the eScooters and eBikes.

“While the number of e-Scooter incidents involving third parties is relatively small, we know that being fully covered is a concern for many riders, as well as the wider public,” Ms Perry said.

“We hope this development will not only help the community to feel reassured that e-Scooters on the streets are covered by insurance, but also set a higher standard for operators, and will contribute to driving the e-Scooter industry forward.”

The upgraded level of protection associated with Neuron’s service makes it similar to more traditional transport modes.

It follows a number of safety initiatives launched by Neuron Mobility, including helmet lock, voice guidance and an in-app quiz.
