Walk to Remember event a chance to honour our lost kids

TERRITORIANS took part in the annual Walk to Remember at Sanctuary Lakes on Sunday, recognising and honourg children who suffered unexpected deaths

Red Nose Day celebrates 30 years of saving young Australians

DARWIN couple Chantelle and Billy Kathopoulis went through the hardest thing any parent can go through in March, when their daughter was stillborn at just 22 weeks.

They were among about 60 people who took part in the Walk to Remember at Sanctuary Lakes yesterday, an annual event now to recognise and honour children who have suffered unexpected deaths.

“I think it's comforting knowing that we’re not alone in this,” Ms Kathopoulis said.

“You think you’ve got to pick yourself back up and just keep going with life, but this brings you back and allows you to feel a little bit more and have permission to cry and mourn and remember.”

The group walked a lap of the lake before gathering for a short ceremony and bubble release in memory of lost loved ones.

SIDS and Kids Northern Territory Bereaved Parents Support NT chairwoman Peta Preo said the walk created a sense of community and fostered awareness around a difficult issue.

“The event allows people to come together and know they’re not alone, there’s a broader community out there,” she said.

“But also when you lose a child you don’t get the birthdays, the assemblies and all of that, so for many families it’s the once or twice time a year, with our other event, that they do get to come and have that recognition.

“It’s important because of that sense of community, but it’s also a way for parents to mark their child once a year, in a public way.”

The Walk to Remember has been running for 10 years.
