A VIDEO clip of an Aboriginal man being slapped in the head with a thong in an unprovoked attack in the heart of the Darwin CBD has sparked anger in the community.

The short clip shows a young man wearing a baseball cap and carrying a pair of thongs, sneaking up behind an Aboriginal man in conversation with a friend.

The attacker, wearing light coloured shorts and a black T-shirt, then slaps the unsuspecting Aboriginal man across the back of his head with a thong. He then turns and runs off laughing.

Giggling can be heard while the incident is captured on camera.

“It makes my blood boil to see this,” a reader, who sent the footage to the NT News, said.

“It was unprovoked, it was dangerous and it was racist.

“There is nothing funny about what happened.

“The question is why? What makes these people think this is funny? What sort of people are they? It is shameful, disgusting behaviour.

“How would they feel if they are out on the street minding their own business and this happened to them?”

It is not known if this was a one-off incident or similar attacks have been happening elsewhere late at night in the Darwin CBD.
