TWO cops who risked their lives to save someone from jumping off a cliff in Darwin have been recognised for their bravery.

Senior Constables Mark Turner and Linda Farrand were handed National Bravery Awards from the Police Federation of Australia.

The negotiators were called to the Darwin Esplanade after reports of a man threatening to self-harm about 7pm on June 11.

They duo negotiated with the man for seven hours.

At 3am, after using extensive negotiating techniques, then man was coaxed back two metres from the edge of the cliff.

Police were comforting the man when he suddenly ran towards the cliff.

Sen Constable Turner grabbed the man before he could jump over the ledge.

Together, Sen Constable Turner and Sen Constable Farrand restrained the man and escorted him to a safe distance away from the ledge.

The duo called for additional police who helped to lift the man to a nearby safety rail where he was then put in the care of St John Ambulance staff.

Senior Constable Mark Turner said: “this is without doubt, the proudest moment of my

career to date and I am even more honoured to share the stage with my colleague and friend, Senior Constable Linda Farrand,” he said.

Negotiator Co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Michael Budge said Sen Constables Turner and Farrand showed exceptional bravery in extremely perilous circumstances.

“Both Senior Constable Turner and Farrand moved from the safety of the barrier out to the edge of the cliff with a sheer plunge onto rocks into the harbour.,” Sen Constable Budge said.

“They acted courageously and responsibly in the face of danger to their lives in order to save the life of a young man in crisis.”

The awards, now in their second year recognise exceptional acts in exceptional circumstances undertaken by Australia’s police.
