TWO 18-year-old tourists had a lucky escape when their tyre burst causing the vehicle to flip and roll, and then erupt into flames, near Emerald Springs about 160km from Darwin.

And their luck didn’t stop there.

Senior Sergeant Josh Cunningham said the vehicle travelling behind was carrying three doctors and a nurse, who then assisted the crash victims.

“They helped extract the driver and the passenger from the vehicle, they both suffered serious spinal injuries and eventually were put on a CareFlight to Darwin,” Sen Sgt Cunningham said.

“Thankfully they still have their lives because the vehicle became engulfed in flames and burnt to pieces.

“The last report we received was they were in a serious but stable condition.”

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said Pine Creek Health Clinic and CareFlight responded to the incident and Adelaide River Health Clinic also assisted.

“I believe there was two 18-year-old young ladies in that vehicle and (they) got them back to Darwin which is a good result,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.

Sen Sgt Cunningham the cause of the accident will be investigated.

Motorbike rider rushed to RDH in serious condition after crash

A NUMBER of serious crashes kept first responders busy over the weekend, said St John NT spokesman Craig Garraway.

Mr Garraway said a motorbike rider came off his bike in Humpty Doo on Saturday.

“The rider had a number of injuries that required paramedics to rush him to hospital in a serious condition,” he said.

Mr Garraway said another serious crash happened in Yarrawonga on Sunday about 3.30pm.

“We had two cars collide and one person was trapped for a period of time in one of those cars,” he said.

“The fire service crew were able to get them out and our paramedics transported that person to hospital in a serious condition with chest injuries.

“I believe they’re recovering in the Royal Darwin Hospital at the moment.”

“We (also) had one in Stuart Park about 8pm on Friday. We had a person taken to the hospital with a minor head injury as a result of the airbag going off,” Mr Garraway said.

Emergency responders rush to ‘serious’ crash on Arnhem Hwy

A ‘SERIOUS’ crash on the Arnhem Hwy near Jabiru has seen a paramedic and critical response unit rush to the scene.

The single car rollover saw the emergency responders sent out to the scene on Thursday about 9.30am.

St John NT Operations Manager Craig Garraway said the crash was “quite serious”.

“Three people involved in that incident, and one of those people made their way to the Palmerston hospital,” Mr Garraway said.

“Otherwise non-life threatening but from what I’ve been told it was quite a serious crash.

“There was a lot of damage to that vehicle.”

Female tourists hurt when vehicle rolls multiple times on highway

TWO young female tourists are lucky to be alive after the driver lost control of their vehicle on the Arnhem Hwy and it rolled multiple times before landing on its roof.

The two 20-year-old women were about 70km west of Jabiru on the Arnhem Hwy when it crashed about 1.30pm on Monday, according to Senior Sergeant Richard Howie said. “They were able to extract themselves from the vehicle but they did suffer some injuries, including bruising and lacerations,” Sgt Howie said.

“They did get some first aid provided by passing motorists before police and the care flight helicopter attended.”

Sgt Howie said the tourists were transferred to Jabiru and then to Darwin for further medical treatment. “We understand they’re not life threatening injuries but they did require hospitalisation,” he said.
