It is the second seismic event felt in the Top End over the past 12 hours with a 7.1 earthquake originating in the Bali Sea about 5.25am waking some Darwinites from their slumber.
The earthquake which started 515km below the surface woke tourists from their sleep with many evacuated on to the streets.
The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no tsunami threat to Australia from either of the earth-shattering events.
It follows a series of quakes in or near the NT throughout 2023 including a 3.4 magnitude in the Timor Sea earlier in August, a 6.2 quake in May and a violent 7.6 magnitude quake in January.
