WHAT is the best fishing spot in the Territory? It’s a question that generates plenty of debate among diehard NT anglers.
NT News and Sunday Territorian columnists Alex Julius, Matt Flynn and Chris Errity, alongside Tackle World’s Shane Compain, have combined their knowledge to count down the top 10 places in the NT.
Today, we reveal numbers 4, 3 and 2 on the list.
4. East Alligator River
WHEN TO FISH: March to April
WHAT TO FISH: Barramundi
It’s a beautiful river upstream with its Arnhem Land/Kakadu escarpment, and can offer frenzied barra fishing downriver during the Run-off.
Big feeder creeks like Magela and Little Magela are renowned for big barra, and provide access to way up on the Magela floodplains.
Over the years, it’s been a happy hunting ground for metre-plus barra.
3. Cobourg Peninsula
WHEN TO FISH: March to April and October to November
WHAT TO FISH: Pelagics, reef fish, Golden Snapper, barramundi and mangrove jacks
Cobourg Peninsula is within the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park.
On the north side, there are several long finger bays, including the expansive Port Essington.
On the southern side, the bays are smaller, and the whole peninsula is dotted with small mangrove creeks.
Cobourg is still largely unspoilt and prearranged permit camping is available at Smith Point. However, many fishing visitors avail themselves of the luxurious Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge which offers first-class professionally-guided fishing.
Once again, a truly beautiful and remote location with so much to offer.

2. Dundee Beach
WHEN TO FISH: All year
WHAT TO FISH: Sailfish, barramundi, pelagics, reef fish and billfish
There are many places within trailer boat range to experience wonderful fishing, including Finniss River, Little Finniss, Point Jenny, Point Blaze, the Peron Islands and offshore reefs. All of these can be accessed from the magnificent new boat ramp, with amenities at Lodge of Dundee.
A huge drawcard is the incredible bill fishing out wide of Dundee where boats regularly raise double-figure numbers of sailfish, and also marlin, in one day.
There’s great barramundi fishing in the Finniss and around the rocky outcrops in Fog Bay.
