A MAN has described how he had to “grab a little girl and hide her” from a barrage of rocks being thrown at a Darwin CBD shopping centre.

In a post on Facebook, Luke Zamolo said he was walking into Woolworths in Darwin CBD on Monday afternoon when he found three men aged in their 20s “smashing windows and kicking scooters and cars”.

Mr Zamolo said he stood his ground and the trio left, but they then returned with rocks.

“They threatened to bash and stab me because I looked at them,” he wrote.

“Once I stood my ground and they took off. I thought it was over so I walked inside to do my shopping. I heard a noise and they had come back with a sh*tload of rocks.

“They were throwing them at everyone and anything. They were trying to hit me by throwing the rocks from the entrance of Woolworths all the way to the back left corner where the meat section is, past the veg n fruit.

“You could only imagine how many people were at risk of getting hit by rocks in that area

It got that bad we had to close the two front doors by locking them out, only opening the doors to try and drag people from the car park and pull them inside to safety.”

Photos posted by Mr Zamolo show damage to windows at the shopping centre, and several cars with windows smashed. He continued to reveal his horror at having to protect a young child from the shower.

“I had to grab a little girl and hide her in the shopping centre away from her parents that were on the other side of the parking lot because a rock literally messed her head by less than a foot,” he said.

“If that rock hit her She would have been in a very bad condition. Somehow I manage to dodge most the rocks and was only hit by one on my back.

“A few woollies staff were punched in the face and another couple of people were hit with rocks. I’m so glad that rock missed that little girl. The image keeps playing over and over in my head. I honestly don’t think she would’ve survived.”

His post has more than 735 reactions on Facebook and more than 400 comments.

Woolworths was contacted for comment.

Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said she was appaled by the photos.

“The rock throwing attack reports from Darwin Woolworths this afternoon are absolutely horrifying,” she said.

“This sort of behaviour must be condemned and action must be taken by the Labor Government before more people are hurt. Typically, all we got on crime from the Chief Minister in estimates hearings today were excuses about why he couldn’t answer questions on the crisis. Just hopeless.”
