NT Health has identified the first case of monkeypox in the Northern Territory.
The case is a returned overseas traveller who is currently in isolation in the Top End and does not pose a risk to the community.
Monkeypox is a viral disease which can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person or contaminated objects.
The first case of monkeypox reported in Australia was on May 20, with 41 cases confirmed since.
Initial symptoms of monkeypox include fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache and body aches.
These symptoms are usually followed by a distinctive rash that may appear on the face, genatalia, inside the mouth, palms of the hands or soles of the feet.
Most people with monkeypox do not require treatment and fully recover from the virus in a few weeks.
