Territory fisho surrounded by crocodiles at Cahills Crossing

A fisho has sent down a challenge to crocs by fishing right up on the water’s edge of one of the Territory’s most notorious crossings. Watch the video.

Crochead fishes at Cahills Crossing

Fishing in the croc-infested Cahills Crossing is not for the faint of heart, but one angler has put himself right on the water’s edge for his chance at a catch.

The Northern Territory’s most infamous river crossing is known for its large crocodile population, while its floodwaters claim dozens of cars every year.

However, one fishermen took his chances with the crossing getting as close as he could to the water’s edge to give himself a chance at catching a fish, or potentially something bigger.

Jody Chisholm of Never Never Safari Tours, which is run by her dad Sean ‘Chizo’ Chisholm, was close at hand to see the crochead in action on Tuesday.

And while she said it was one of the best spots for catching barramundi, she wouldn’t personally dare get that close to the water’s edge.

She said she counted 25 crocodiles at one time in close vicinity, as the fishermen whipped his bait around in front of them.

Ms Chishold said it was best to stand on top of the rocks or on the viewing platform to fish to your heart’s content rather than getting in the way of the apex predators.

And while there are so many crocodiles to see, she said they’re not something she gets scared of.

“The fishing these is awesome, barramundi is mostly caught, but you also have catfish and mullet sometimes too,” she said.

“I don’t get scared, it’s more of an adrenaline rush for me, I just love it. I’m high up on the rocks and viewing platform so we’re completely safe.”

Ms Chisholm warned people looking to go fishing at the spot not to fish from the roads or at the water’s edge.

“We run a business here in Kakadu and I like to go down on my days off to get footage for advertising,” she said.

“Every time I go there’s always people fishing from the rocks or the road which is highly unsafe.

“If you’re going to go fishing I highly recommend going out in a boat and not standing at the water’s edge, I wouldn’t stand that close to the water.

“You can’t see them but they can see you regardless, its way safer if you’re out in your own boat, the best time to go fishing is when the high tide comes through.”

It comes as a crocodile was spotted in the popular dog exercise area at Marlow Lagoon, Palmerston, sparking a warning from City of Palmerston council.

That sighting has been reported to the NT Crocodile Management Team.
