Torres Strait Island elder Mr Bon, who will be the event’s keynote speaker, said while native title law had been complicated by politics over the years, the Mabo decision in 1992 had been a turning point for Indigenous land rights in Australia.
“It really shook the world actually,” he said.
“It was a big win for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”
The Mabo Day event starts at 9am and will run all day.
