Put the trunk away: Vandalism stop swimming plans in Tennant Creek
January 5: “Sad” vandalism has put a stop to swimming in Tennant Creek ahead of a hot, 40C week for the town.
Struck by overnight vandals, the Tennant Creek Town Pool was closed on Sunday due to damage to water holding tanks that supply both the town pool and Purkiss Reserve.
Sharing the news on Facebook, the Barkly Regional Council said repair works would soon be underway to fix the “disappointing” incident.
“We understand how disappointing this is, especially during the warmer weather, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the post said.
“Our team is working urgently to assess the situation and make necessary repairs to restore services as quickly as possible.”
Disgruntled community members shared their frustration for the snap closure of the pool, with one commenter saying it was extremely sad for the Tennant Creek community “just when it starts to get hot”.
“That’s terrible, why would someone ruin it for everybody else … that’s so sad,” one person said.
“What stupidity … kids need this pool to stay fit and out of trouble. What a waste,” another commenter said.
The Tennant Creek Town Pool has been used recently for the youth centre’s school holiday program, holding barbecues, music and dance nights, and water play activities throughout the summer holidays.
