Tender released for entrance upgrade to Territory Wildlife Park

Popular destination Territory Wildlife Park is set to get a makeover with a tender for upgrades recently released.

TERRITORY Wildlife Park is set for a facelift.

The Government has released a tender for upgrades to the entrance at the popular Top End tourist spot.

The $2.78m project will begin at the end of January and should be completed on March 11.

The architectural and accessibility works will improve visitor access and improve the transition from carpark to the exhibits.

Much of the focus is on accessibility, with new alignments for accessible carpark bays in the visitor carpark.

The entry from the carpark is being resurfaced and raised to allow for puddle-free access to the building.

The inside of the gift shop, admissions desk and cafe is being completely refurbished with new lay-out, new flooring and a revamp that will ensure a brand new look and feel at the park.

As well, visitor toilets are being reconfigured and spruced up to ensure they comply with modern accessibility requirements and a new visitor access ramp will be built to improve access to the transport trains at the park.

Parks and Rangers Minister Selena Uibo said the upgrade was a welcome addition.

“The entrance to the Territory Wildlife Park is set to benefit from a major facelift with a $2.78m capital works program set to begin early next year,” she said.

“This will include upgrades to the park’s main station and entry area with design work already completed by GHDWoodhead.

“When complete, these upgrades will significantly improve accessibility to the Territory Wildlife Park while also boosting visitor amenity.

“Territorians love the Territory Wildlife Park – and the Territory Labor Government has backed it every step of the way.”

The Park’s future was recently under scrutiny when a former Wildlife Park zookeeper and the Opposition Country Liberal Party claimed the Government was planning to reduce animal numbers and close popular exhibits such as the Dome Aviary and Ridge.

The Government responded by extending a $900,000 lifeline to the Wildlife Park to retain the exhibits. The Park opened in 1989 on 400ha of natural bushland near Berry Springs.
