A tender for the next stage of a major Darwin project will be released in coming days, with hopes it will help cool parts of the CBD.

THE next stage of transforming a key precinct in Darwin’s CBD will get underway in coming months, with the government preparing to release new tenders.

Work will begin on the Liberty Square precinct in 2022, with a $100,000 tender to design the area to be opened up to be released this week.

The latest stage of the State Square redevelopment, Liberty Square takes in the area between Parliament House, Supreme Court and Government House.

The new area would include a ‘quiet zone’ with seating, better access through the area, and would be linked with the Civic and State Square revitalisation.

Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said the new Liberty Square plans would be an improvement on the current use of the space.

“The design will respect the history of the area and surrounding institutional buildings,” Ms Lawler said.

“Additionally it will retain qualities of the existing site such as the views to Darwin Harbour, historical markers, heritage listed trees and open lawns.”

Port Darwin MLA Paul Kirby, whose electorate includes the State Square precinct, said the new addition would help cool the Darwin CBD.

“The revitalised Liberty Square will be another leafy, green space to enjoy in the heart of our tropical city,” Mr Kirby said.

“By cooling the CBD and activating our public spaces, we’re making Darwin an even more attractive destination for workers and their families.”

Local companies would be used to help supply and build the new space.

It follows previous parts of the State Square redevelopment, including a $19.4m underground carpark which opened in January 2020 and a lawn out the front of Parliament House which opened earlier this year on the site of the former Henry Chan building.

Work on another segment of the State Square precinct on the site of the 90-bay parliamentary carpark is expected to finish later this year.
