EARLIER: THE Top End is getting a glimpse of the wet season moving in with some showers today, while warmer winter conditions recently felt in the Red Centre have moved aside for cooler conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) posted on Twitter a trough will bring cooler and windier conditions to the central districts for much of this week.

“These windier conditions will move north and trigger some showers about the Top End on Tuesday. A surge is likely to generate showers and maybe even a storm today as it pushes into moist tropical air over the area.”

Point Stuart has recorded 40mm of rain so far today and Darwin has had a minimum of 24.9C so far, the warmest since April 23.

Temperatures in Alice Springs are expected to sit around 18C for the next few days, plummeting to 0C overnight on Thursday.

Maximum temperatures are forecast in the mid to high 20s from Friday to Monday.

BOM forecasts the cooler surge felt in the centre will extend into Northern Australia by Wednesday and bring dry conditions to the Top End.

A severe fire danger warning is in place for the Gregory District.
