Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

TERRITORIANS have proven themselves to be the nation’s biggest boozers and smokers with wastewater data indicating NT residents have the highest average of alcohol and nicotine in the country.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s 11th National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program also revealed the Territory had the highest average capital city consumption of MDMA in the country and the second-highest average regional consumption of cannabis.

Wastewater was collected in April this year from two sites across the NT — one in Darwin and the other in a regional centre.

Despite the NT topping the list for the consumption of cigarettes and booze, consumption was down in Darwin and regionally when compared with data collected in December last year.

Data also revealed average methylamphetamine, cocaine and MDMA consumption decreased in both sites.

Average MDA excretion increased in the capital city site and decreased in the regional site and average heroin consumption increased in both sites.

Report 11 covers about 56 per cent of Australia’s population. In total, 55 wastewater treatment plants across Australia participated in the April collection, which monitored 13 substances.

ACIC chief executive Michael Phelan said pandemic restrictions affected illicit drug markets and shaped results in the report in ways that offer unprecedented insights into Australian drug markets.

“The results show that all drugs monitored by the program continue to be available within Australia,” he said.

“Drug consumption across Australia during the COVID-19 period is characterised by diversity between and within jurisdictions and across drug types.

“Operational activity in which the ACIC has been involved with its partners indicates that many serious and organised crime groups in the major drug markets continued to operate on a ‘business as usual’ basis throughout the pandemic, importing, manufacturing and trafficking illicit drugs.”
