Shops, customers welcome new NT sign-in measures in fight against COVID-19

A DARWIN beauty salon has welcomed the new sign-in measures for NT businesses announced by the Chief Minister yesterday, saying it will keep their staff and customers safe.

Close contacts, casual contacts, suspected cases: how do you know when you should isolate?

CITY nail salon Cre8tive Nailz and Beauty put in place their own COVID-19 measures when they were allowed to reopen on May 15.

The CBD-based salon upgraded their booking system so they were able to collect everyone’s details and length of appointments.

Owners Rosie and Manpreet Thind welcomed the new sign-in measures saying it would keep their staff and customers safe.

“We get all the details to contact them anytime if something happens they can check the details of who’s come into the shop,” Mr Thind said.

“We also have video recordings so we can see when people come and go.”

Mr Thind said they would become more strict with collecting the details of walk-in appointments to abide by the new measures, which come into effect on November 30.

The shop has also put in place shields, hand sanitiser and masks as extra measures to keep staff and customers safe from COVID-19.

“The Northern Territory is a very safe place and we should try to keep it safe,” Mr Thind said.

Customer Sonia Montegro, who was released from a 14-day quarantine stint at Howard Springs yesterday after coming up from Melbourne, supported the strict measures.

“I think it’s absolutely a great idea, the government is doing all the right things and precautions,” Ms Montegro said.

“Being able to track where people have been where they’ve come from, we had the problem with contact tracing in Victoria, we had the second wave and obviously you don't want to be in that position.”

Ms Montegro said it was surprising the Territory didn’t have the sign in requirements at venues already.

“Even with Melbourne opening up for a couple of weeks in June and it was limited to a certain number of people at a certain place, you still had to sign in,” she said.

“I’m surprised that a place like this hasn’t had it given you have been COVID free for a long time.”

Businesses and organisations required to comply with sign-in measures include cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, cinemas, entertainment and amusement venues, hairdressers, barbers, beauty therapy services like nail salons and tattoo parlours, tourism operators like bus or boat operators, swimming pools and gyms.
