Season 6 also introduces the Double Tag Barra for the first time, recognising both the angler and a mate when it comes time to divvy up the winnings.

Each of the five fishing regions that make up the Million Dollar Fish competition contains one Double Tag Barra, with the winning fisho to score $10,000, plus another $5000 to give to a mate.

Million Dollar Fish Season 2 winner Kelli Carroll made history as the first woman to catch a tagged barra, and was thrilled to drop her line for Season 6.

“I put it in my calendar every year to make sure I don’t forget,” she said.

She urged fishos to double check their barra for tags, after being sceptical when she reeled in her win.

“I didn’t realise I actually had the tag until it was in the boat and I’d actually been trying to flick it off the line because it didn’t look that big and I wasn’t that interested in bringing something that small,” she said.

“When it wouldn’t spit the hook I brought it into the boat and that’s when I realised. It was kind of a surreal moment.

“It’s like oh my god it’s real, this is real. It’s a real comp, you know, normal people do, and can win and catch those fish.”

The competition opens on Thursday.
