NEWLY-elected Senator Jacinta Price has vowed to hold the Albanese government to account while also slamming Labor’s wish for an Indigenous voice to parliament as “symbolism”.
Despite Prime Minister Elect Anthony Albanese mentioning the Indigenous voice to parliament multiple times through his victory speech on Saturday night, Ms Price said it was an example of “empty sort of gestures that don’t actually go to the heart of the issues that we’re confronted with”.
“These issues are ongoing, and yet at no point have we heard from Labor, how … they’re going to deal with youth suicide, how they’re going to deal with the high rates of domestic and family violence, how they’re going to take the kids off the streets of Alice Springs,” she said.
Ms Price, who is likely to be the Coalition’s only Indigenous MP, also said she would urge the federal Labor government to extend the Stronger Futures laws which keep Indigenous communities dry. “As it looks right now, the Territory government to just allow alcohol back into communities is deeply concerning,” she said.
“I feel like that communities have not had a chance to be listened to, their voices have not been consulted and not been heard.” Ms Price said it would be “interesting” to have three Indigenous members of parliament from the Northern Territory, highlighting their differences on key topics such as the Cashless Debit Card.
