A ROAD construction crew has unearthed an unexploded Japanese bomb more than 70 years after it was dropped on Darwin during the hostilities of World War II.

A crew working on Darwin’s Tiger Brennan Drive made the discovery late on Thursday afternoon.

The bomb was dropped in one of more than 60 Japanese raids on Darwin between February 1942 to November 1943.

It’s the second bomb to have been discovered since work began on the upgrade of Tiger Brennan Dr.

Police immediately cordoned off an area close to Stoddart St near the up-market suburb of Bayview after the discovery.

Explosives experts from the Royal Australian Army’s Joint Logistics Unit – North were called by police after it was confirmed that the bomb still had its fuse intact.

The army bomb disposal team removed the bomb but they refused to provide detail on the disposal process of the 70 year-old bomb.

In a short written statement Defence said the bomb needed to be “disposed of” and that had taken place at “a separate location”.

There was no explanation about where the separate location was or what type of bomb it might have been.

The army also failed to provide any detail about the bomb to history experts at the NT Government’s Heritage Branch.

It is impossible to determine when the bomb might have been dropped or what its target might have been.

Historians were yesterday unwilling to speculate on what type of bomb it might have been.

There were a range of bombs dropped on Darwin during air raids on the town during World War II.

The largest bombs dropped were 500kg but they were used only in the first raid on Darwin on February 19, 1942. Estimates put the number of bombs dropped in that raid alone at 680.
