SIX people have been slapped with fines after holding a sit-in protest in the lobby of the Home Affairs Department over the detention of nine Iranian refugees in a Darwin hotel.
Members of the ‘Free the Darwin 15’ were each penalised $472 each and held in custody for two hours on Thursday afternoon.
One of the protesters, Gemma Crocetti of Rapid Creek, said they decided to protest after appeals for the Medevac refugees’ release went unanswered.
“We’ve tried all the usual avenues – phone calls and emails – and received absolutely nothing,” Ms Crocetti said.
She said she has been a part of the campaign to free the five men and four women for 61 days.
“Their medical needs are not being met at all.”
