Power and Water employees have been warned not to speak to the media as the Government-owned corporation continues to investigation allegations of recruitment and procurement misconduct.

Power and Water chief executive Michael Thomson emailed all staff last Friday after the NT News revealed the corporation had launched an internal inquiry into the misconduct allegations.

“It is disappointing to see that there have been allegations raised in the media concerning unacceptable conduct in our recruitment and procurement practices,” Mr Thomson wrote in an all-staff email that has now been leaked to the NT News.

“By this matter being raised directly to the media, it has unfairly tarnished the reputation of Power and Water in the community and reflects on every one of our people working hard every day to deliver essential services to our customers.”

Power and Water launched the internal probe after a whistleblower wrote to Chief Minister Michael Gunner detailing concerns about the processes followed to recruit six former Territory Insurance Office staff who have now been either employed or awarded consultancy contracts at Power and Water.

Mr Thomson asked his staff “that you do not speculate and contribute to the public discourse on this matter”.

He said if staff had concerns they should go through channels other than the media, and that the corporation would investigate and take the appropriate action.

“Employees also have direct accessibility to the independent Commissioner Against Corruption as an independent statutory body,” he said.

“As employees, we should appreciate the importance for us to permit the process of an investigation in relation to the claims to be undertaken and completed, so that the allegations and inferences can be definitively responded to. It will be through this process that our employees are protected.”
