St John NT paramedics found an unconscious driver after rolling their car in the Outback.

Driver gets washed away on a rural Darwin causeway

UPDATE – 7.30am, Friday: PASSENGERS of a car which rolled “just outside” of Katherine were rushed to hospital on Thursday.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said a person was trapped in the vehicle for an extended amount of time.

“As with a lot of these crashes in the Outback there, our biggest fear is finding someone later on and that’s what actually happened yesterday,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.

“Police found another person had been involved in that crash and was unconscious and was transported to the Katherine Hospital along with the other people in the original crash.

“They’re all recovering which is a great thing.”

“Unfortunately, his vehicle – a small hatchback – was caught in the swift current and swept approximately 20 metres downstream before becoming wedged in trees,” Commander Koomen said.

The man was able to extract himself from the vehicle and climb to the roof of his car.

Witnesses to the incident called emergency services. NT Fire and Rescue Service, Police and St John NT responded.

The rescue took more than an hour to complete.

Sergeant Darren Robson said, “On this occasion the driver was fortunate to be unharmed however the potential was there for this situation to have a negative outcome”.

“It is critical that if you’re driving a vehicle and you encounter unfamiliar flood waters to stop and find an alternative route.”
