The Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch is currently investigating the origins of the fire and is reassuring the Yirrkala Community that it appears to be an isolated incident.

“It was lucky that the house was unoccupied at the time,” Constable First Class David Hughes said.

“An incident like this demonstrates the importance of working smoke alarms, which alerted the neighbour to the fire.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the fire or has any information are urged to contact Northern Territory Police on 131444 or alternatively anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
