UPDATE: FIRST responders to an outback crash that left two people dead raced to the nearby community to get assistance, it has been revealed.

Two adults died in a single vehicle crash near a remote community northwest of Alice Springs over the weekend, with police receiving reports of a rollover around 6.30am on Saturday.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC Darwin it was “a really bad Friday and Saturday”.

“We had reports of a car crash down there and about five people made their way five or six kilometres to a community to raise the alarm but unfortunately two people there had passed away at that crash,” he said.

In another outback tragedy over the weekend, a 10-year-old child died in a single vehicle crash at Groote Eylandt.

Police say the boy was one of several children travelling in a Toyota 4-wheel-drive that rolled off road about 1.30pm on Friday.

The other occupants self-extracted and one child was later transported to Gove Hospital for treatment.

The 52-year-old driver was arrested and flown to Darwin where he was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Major Crash detectives travelled to Alyangula to investigate.

The man was charged with driving a motor vehicle causing death, four counts of recklessly endanger life (aggravated) and being unlicensed.

A 10-year-old boy, one of several children in the car, died at the scene.

The other occupants managed to exit the car and a child was later taken to Gove Hospital for treatment.

The 52-year-old driver was arrested and flown to Darwin where he was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Also on Friday two adults died in a single vehicle crash northwest of Alice Springs.

Just after 6.30am police received a report of the rollover involving a Holden sedan along the unsealed Kintore Rd, 80km east of Papunya.

Two people, a man and woman aged in their 40s were found deceased.

Major Crash has also travelled to the scene.

The investigation will determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor.

“Both crashes in remote locations tragically resulted in deaths and will impact upon many people including family and friends,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

“No-one should have to spend Christmas grieving the loss of a loved one. Please take extra care on the road.”
