PLANS have been lodged for a new McDonalds to be built along the Stuart Hwy in the booming Darwin suburb of Berrimah.
The new Maccas, proposed for the corner of the Stuart Hwy, Panquee Blvd and Julius St, is situated to close to the growing Northcrest precinct.
It will include a ‘Playland’ and a drive-through which will exceed the Planning Scheme.
In a development application submitted to the NT government, McDonalds Australia said the new facility would be a “a modern building with a high standard of design that responds to the characteristics of the site”.
“The proposed height, bulk and scale of the building is appropriate and will achieve the urban design intent for the Northcrest community.
“The building has been positioned on the site to frame the commercial area of the Northcrest community in an effective and legible manner.”
Plans show the Maccas will take up one of four plots of land on the site, the others of which will be developed as the Northcrest community grows.
While there will be 35 carparking spaces at the eatery, the application also asks permission for the development to exceed the NT Planning Scheme’s desired capacity limit for any drive-through restaurant of 10 cars.
“The proposed drive through design allows for a total of 15 vehicles to queue from the
collection point, which far exceeds the Planning Scheme requirement.”
In its application, McDonalds argued the development should be approved because it would provide “employment opportunities in the emerging Northcrest community”.
“The proposed development will ‘kickstart’ the commercial/retail precinct of the Northcrest community and will have an anchoring effect on the precinct,” it said.
“Once the proposed development is established, other businesses and investment will be further attracted to Northcrest.”
Another Maccas is currently planned for Casuarina, near the Hungry Jacks.
