1/10No. 20. Bethany Maley and Peter Maley: If you’re in strife with the law, Peter Maley is one of the blokes you want on your side. The lawyer turned politician turned magistrate turned lawyer again is one of the highest profile criminal defenders in the Territory. He has courted plenty of controversy during his long career in the Territory, but nothing seems to stick for too long. No doubt he gets some advice from his wife Bethaney on how to maintain his high profile and status as the Territory’s teflon man — she’s a successful communications consultant.
Picture gallery: The Territory’s Top 20 Power Couples
YOU’VE heard of people talk about the Power and the Passion, right?
Well, we’ve done more than just talk about it. The NT Newshas chosen the Territory’s most powerful couples and listed them in order from 20 to 1.
2/10No 19. Kon Vatskalis and Amy Yu-Vatskalis: As Lord Mayor of Darwin, Kon Vatskalis wields a large amount of power around Darwin. He leads the conversation at council’s fortnightly meetings and is as brave as he is brash. A recent example of the power he holds came in the CU in the NT slogan debate, where his vote as the lord mayor broke the deadlock in the debate, supporting by-laws which would enforce a ban on the slogan. His other half, Amy Yu-Vatskalis is a lecturer in Chinese studies and co-ordinator of the Chinese in-country study program. As the Northern Territory Government and Darwin council tries to build relations into China and South East Asia, Ms Yu-Vatskalis could be an important link in connecting Darwin residents with our neighbours to the north.
3/10No 18. Jess Mauboy and Themeli Magripilis: Our Jess is a bona fide superstar. She’s been with long time partner Themeli Magripilis for a decade and sent women’s magazines and social media into a spin when she walked the red carpet at the ARIAs with a massive sparkler on her left hand. Jess’s management was quick to hose down hopes the couple would be married any time soon, but we can’t hope but speculate just what tourist clout a home grown Territory wedding would have,
4/10No 17. Jodie and David Ryan: As the chief executive of the Department of Chief Minister, Jodie Ryan is the Territory’s most senior public servant. She and husband David Ryan, who is also a high ranking public servant, should be higher up the list, but her pull is slipping as people in high places increasingly question her performance as the public debt continues to mount.
5/10No 16. Lia Finocchiaro and Sam Burke: One half of the CLP Opposition, Lia Finocchiaro has an important role in the Territory in keeping the Labor Government to account. A born and bred Territorian, she’s heavily involved in the Italian community. Her husband, Darwin Waterfront Corporation general manager Sam Burke, also has a political lineage — he’s the son of former CLP chief minister Denis Burke.
6/10No 15. Therese Austin and Matthew Grant: The legal power couple returned to Darwin after a few years in Western Australia. The move back home came when Ms Austin was appointed a Local Court Judge. Mr Grant, who is Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Grant’s brother, has picked up a gig as general manager of ICAC.
7/10No 14. Craig and Robyn Lambley: The Central Australians wield significant influence across the Territory. Robyn, in her role as independent MLA for Araluen, has been very effective as a dissenting voice against the Gunner Government. Her new alliance with Terry Mills is something to be feared by her political opponents. Her husband Craig is a big business owner who wields significant clout in the community. He is also chairman of the Alice Springs Turf Club and on the board of Thoroughbred Racing NT.
8/10No 13. Matt and Kaia Wright: The Outback Wrangler and his glamorous wife are two of our biggest international exports. Matt’s National Geographic program takes the Territory into lounge rooms all across the world and Kaia is an ambassador for crocodile oil skincare company Golden 8. Together, the pair is behind some fantastic NT tourism initiatives including Darwin Airboat Tours and Top End Safari Camp. If that’s not enough to keep them busy, they’ve got a baby boy on the way, due early August.
9/10No 12. Len Notaras and Robyn Cahill: The power couple of health administration in the Territory. Robyn is the boss of FCD Health, which runs the Palmerston Super Clinic and CDU’s Waterfront clinic. Her husband Len Notaras, who was formerly the chief executive of NT Health, is still active in the sector through his role as the executive director of the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre.
10/10No 11. Darlene Chin and Daryl Thomas: Chances are if you’re a bloke in Darwin, you’ve been dressed by Darlene Chin. She is one of the city’s best retail success stories and her menswear store Attitude last year celebrated 25 years in business. As the vice-chair of Darwin City Waterfront Retailers Association, Darlene is never shy about making her opinion known on matters affecting city traders. Her partner Daryl Thomas is the Territory’s wine king. The booze merchant operates the Territory’s only air-conditioned warehouse so his plonk makes its way to your table in the best condition possible.
