A drunken joy ride on a mini motorbike has left a young Humpty Doo woman without a licence and a hefty total of fines.

Peta-Marie Ash Maddigan pleaded guilty to a string of driving offences in the Darwin Local Court on Monday, including a high-range drink driving charge with a 0.174 blood alcohol reading.

The court heard she drove a Yamaha PW50 along Wood Crescent in Rosebery, Palmerston, on September 23 while under the influence of alcohol.

The motorbike was unregistered, uninsured, without a number plate, while Ms Maddigan rode the bike without lights on, without a helmet and unlicensed.

Ms Maddigan pleaded guilty to all seven charges, telling Judge Thomasin Opie the ride was the result of “fun and games” and “peer pressure”.

“At the time we thought it was just a little bit of fun and games … it was all decided by peer pressure unfortunately,” she said, representing herself in court.

“I was not the only one at the premises that was doing it.

“I’ve definitely learnt my lesson and will never do it again.”

Ms Opie said although the 21-year-old was not riding “very far”, she was riding under the influence and on a public street.

“The dangers of driving I’m sure are not lost on you.

“The Northern Territory has a very high road toll and a lot of that is attributable to drink drivers,” Ms Opie said.

“I do accept though that this is an unusual drink driving situation.

“I take into account the fact that you’re a young person, that you’ve pleaded guilty at the very first opportunity, that you do not have a criminal history.

“That you are going to be severely inconvenienced by virtue of living in a rural area and having to drive 30 minutes to work every day.”

Ms Maddigan was ordered to pay a $1100 fine along with seven victim levies of $150 each.

Her car licence was suspended for twelve months from the date of the offences.
