A man has been killed after he was struck by a car at 100km/h in Darwin, with the driver testing positive for drugs.

The 36-year-old man died shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene on Tiger Brennan Drive, about 8pm Tuesday.

Police said the 50-year-old driver had stopped at the scene, though allege he had since returned a positive test for drugs.

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for the purpose of a blood test and is assisting police enquiries.

Police also arrested a 46-year-old man at the scene, who remains in custody and is expected to be charged in relation to the incident.

The road has since reopened to the public after traffic diversions were in place throughout the night.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said it was a “complicated investigation” with multiple people in custody.

“The Major Crime Unit is assisting The Major Crash Investigation Unit in relation to the incident leading up to the fatal crash,” he said.

“Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the crash, the disturbance beforehand, or if you have dashcam of the people involved to make contact on 131 444. Please quote reference 24055403.”

It comes after a pedestrian was killed on the Stuart Hwy near Jenkins Rd on February 3 after being struck by a vehicle, while a 22-year-old man was identified as the person hit by a truck near Mataranka on January 18.

The latest incident brings the NT road toll for 2024 to 10, compared to one death on Territory roads at this point last year.
