A DARWIN brewery is asking Territorians to get behind their bid to host a national beer show in the Top End.
One Mile Brewing Co. wants to turn the gaze of beer drinkers away from the established southern breweries to the NT to taste the freshness and quality of the Territory’s local drops.
A regular entrant in the Great Australian Beer Spectacular (GABS), One Mile Brewing Co. had four beers in the top 100 in 2018 and regularly showcases the best of the Territory’s locally made brews. And while the priority is their beer placing in the GABS top 100, hosting the beer spectacular would be a big win for the Territory.
One Mile co-owner Bardy Bayram says while competition is tough for hosting rights, he’s hoping strong performances by local breweries will sway organisers to bring the event to Darwin.
He’s teamed with Hot 100 to get Territorians behind the beer-fest.
“The Territory gets forgotten with all the talk of the beers down south but we have a growing industry here and we reckon there’ll be plenty of support around Darwin to host the conference here,” Mr Bayram said.
“We want Territorians to get behind the vote to get the Territory back on the Australian beer map. We’ll try to rally the associations to look at the Territory when they’re deciding.”
Voting on the Hot 100 website closes January 14 and can be reached via onemilebrewery.com.au.
Aside from the sheer weight of numbers in favour of holding the event at a southern venue, Mr Bayram says southerners don’t understand the local peculiarities of Territory beers.
“We’re trying hard to get our Territory beers on the beer map but New South Wales, Queensland and the other big states forget about us,” he said.
“We’re pushing good beers out and they’re all made for the Territory lifestyle so you can drink them in the Top End climate. We make it more palatable for the territory climate so it’s light in body, refreshing and easy to drink.”
Home-brewing enthusiasts, Mr Bayram and co-founder Stuart Brown launched their business in a Stuart Park shed near the old One Mile Station, experimenting with a number of different products including beer, cider and seltzers. They moved the brewery to Coonawarra Rd, Winnellie in 2017, from where they have grown the business and won a multiple awards for brewing and hospitality including a Brolga Award last year in the wineries, breweries, distillers’ category and a gong for their 4:21 beer at Independent Brewers Association awards.
