A DARWIN teen has become the second student from the Northern Territory in 35 years to represent Australia at the 2021 International Science Olympiads.

Darwin High School year 12 student Olivia Anderson made the International Earth Science Olympiad team and is one of 21 young Aussies who will compete against more than 1000 students across the world through online exams and challenges.

She is the first student from the Territory to make a team since 2007, and only the second in the Olympiads’ 35 years.

“I’m really excited to be representing Australia because there’s probably not going to be all that many chances I get to be able to do something like this,” Olivia said.

“The thing I like about science is the moments when you’re sitting there and then all these different pieces come together and you go, ‘oh right, that’s why it makes sense’. Earth Sciences is actually really good for this because it combines physics, chemistry, biology into thinking of how different systems connect.”

Olivia encouraged more students to explore the competition and the broader science field.

She will compete in the International Earth Science Olympiad from August 25-30.
