Fireworks the equivalent weight of about two monster crocs are set to light up Darwin Waterfront this New Year’s Eve.

A massive two tonnes of pyrotechnics have been set up across five platforms on the Darwin breakwater for two spectacular displays across the evening.

According to the Guinness World Records, Cassius, a male saltwater crocodile caught in the Finniss River in the NT and who recently died in captivity off Cairns, was recognised as the world’s largest crocodile in captivity weighing in at 968kg - just shy of a tonne.

This year’s display has been specially designed for the Darwin Waterfront, pyrotechnician Andrew Howard said.

“There’s two displays, one at 9pm and one at midnight and they’re both spectacular shows that are going to be synchronised to a music soundtrack that’ll be played from the stage down [at the Waterfront],” he said.

“There’s about two tonnes of fireworks over the both shows and it’s put on by a very sophisticated software.

“Each show is digitally programmed on a computer and there’s a computer firing system that shoots off every firework with an electric fuse.

“[Darwin Waterfront] is its own little pyro-amphitheatre on New Year’s Eve and the reflections off the water are absolutely beautiful.”

Entertainment will kick start at the Darwin Waterfront from 5pm, but gates will open at 3pm so be sure to get the best seats in the house.

Darwin Waterfront senior events co-ordinator Yasmine Welsh said punters should prepare for an evening’s worth of great local musicians and DJs.

“We anticipate about 9500 people coming out this year, which is pretty similar to last year,” she said.

“New Year’s Eve at the Waterfront is always a great night, it’s a very Territory event.

“Last year we had an awesome night and we’re confident this year will be exactly the same.

“We’ve got a great line-up of local bands, two fireworks displays and also the new Liquid Light show, which is different from the Christmas one and will be starting on New Year’s Eve and going until January 5.”

The alcohol-free event is a great place to take the family for a picnic or party in the new year.
