SEVEN people were rescued off East Point after their catamaran capsized on Friday night.

NT Police Duty Superintendent Tony Deutrom said about 6.15pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communications centre received reports of flares being sighted off East Point, and an EPIRB had been activated.

“While the water police section co-ordinated their response, two off police officers in a fishing vessel of their own sighted the flares and responded, 2.5km off East Point,” he said.

“A catamaran, about 30ft in length with seven people on board, had capsized and the mast had snapped off.

“The off duty police officers were able to recover the seven occupants and take them to shore to the Darwin Sailing Club. There was no reported injuries and inquiries are continuing with the water police section to ascertain what exactly occurred and what led to the incident.”

Duty Supt Deutrom said it was a timely reminder to ensure all vessels had the appropriate emergency and safety equipment.
