Heat health warnings have been put in place in the Northern Territory with temperatures set to peak in the mid-to-high-40s over the coming week, the Bureau of Meteorology reports.

High temperatures have been forecast to continue over the coming days and as a result, NT Health has issued extreme heat health warnings for locations in the Barkly, Daly, Gregory and Tiwi regions.

Despite the NT often having hot weather, heat health warnings indicate conditions have exceeded normal levels and the communities need to take personal action to protect themselves and others.

Bureau meteorologist Dean Narramore said maximum and minimum temperatures were well above average for this time of year.

“Severe heatwave and extreme fire dangers [will] impact much of the country over the coming days,” Mr Narramore said.

“And you can see that’s triggering across large parts of the country with extreme heatwaves across much of northern Australia.”

Temperatures in Tennant Creek over Monday and Tuesday are set to scorch at 44C, while Timber Creek will peak at 45C on Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.

Alpurrurulam sits at the highest end of the mercury, reaching 45C on Monday and Tuesday, and 46C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Daguragu will hit 45C on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, spending the remaining days in the low 40s.

Nauiyu will reach 39C on Monday and Tuesday, and 38C on Wednesday, while Milikapiti will be 36C on Monday and Tuesday, and 35C on Wednesday, both communities on the lower end of the forecast but still have health warnings.

In the major centres, Darwin temperatures will range between 33-35C all week while Katherine will be 38-41C and Alice Springs temperatures will be 39-44C.

NT Health has recommended communities stay in air-conditioning where possible or seek out shady areas, stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, and look after those most at risk including children and older people, as well as pets.
