PEOPLE are leaving the NT in droves with 1000 residents opting to move elsewhere in 2018, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The Territory was the only jurisdiction to see a decline in its population.
Darwin was also the only capital city to lose residents. It has a population of 148,564 and lost 355 people, equating to 0.2 per cent of the population.
However, numbers grew in regional NT by 165 people to reach a population of 98,763.
ABS figures further broke down the population figures for Darwin.
“Darwin experienced a net internal migration loss of 2,800 people, which offset gains made from natural increase (1,800) and net overseas migration (640), contributing to an overall population decline for the city.”
Palmerston South however, experienced some of the fastest growth in the country, coming in a fifth spot.
As of June 30, 4947 people resided in the southern suburbs of Palmerston an increase of 878 residents or 21.6 per cent in the 12 months prior.
