NT Police: Women beaten in violent ’scourge’

Two women have been stabbed and kicked in the face in ‘serious’ domestic violence incidents in the NT.

TWO women are recovering from serious injuries related to a rising trend police call the “scourge of the Northern ­Territory”.

NT Police said the pair were left with serious injuries after a Winnellie woman was stabbed and a Palmerston woman had her face stomped on Tuesday evening.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of greater Darwin and road policing Martin Dole said both assaults were alleged domestic violence incidents.

Police have charged a 41-year-old man with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering serious harm, alleging he stabbed the 40-year-old woman at Winnellie at 4pm on Tuesday.

Only four hours later police were called to a second serious domestic violence incident at Gray, Palmerston.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Greater Darwin and Road Policing Martin Dole said both assaults were alleged domestic violence incidents.

Police alleged a 27-year-old woman was laying on a mattress when a 34-year-old man started kicking her in the face at 8.15pm.

“Her partner (who was) wearing steel cap boots kicked her multiple times in the face, resulting in serious facial injuries,” Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said.

Police said the alleged offender fled the scene, but was found a short time later.

Mr Dole said there was an active domestic violence order against the 34-year-old alleged offender.

“We’re calling it out. This behaviour has to stop. It is abhorrent,” he said.

Domestic violence experts have warned about spikes in violence under lockdowns, and Mr Dole said he was concerned for the Territory.

“We are always worried about domestic violence incidents. It’s a scourge of the Northern Territory,” he said.

“We have seen an increase in DV related offending since this time last year, and it’s not good enough.”
