UPDATE JAN 18, 3PM: THE Timber Creek region is in mourning a 23-year-old woman who was fatally hit by a passing car after a breakdown on the highway.

NT Police have revealed the 23-year-old woman was from the local area and was with a group when their car broke down on a remote section of the Victoria Highway, at Timber Creek, late Friday night January 7.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said their vehicle was forced to stop on the side of the highway near the Skull Creek Major Bridge.

While the group was waiting for help the young woman was struck by a passing vehicle at 11.40pm.

Emergency Services attempted to revive her, however, the woman was later declared deceased.

“Investigations into the actions taken by the driver after the crash is ongoing,” Sgt Borton said.

“The driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs and speed has been ruled out as a contributing factor.”

UPDATE JAN 7, 11AM: A WOMAN has died in a horror late night crash on a remote Territory highway.

NT Police confirmed an woman died after being struck by a vehicle on Victoria Highway, 40km east of Timber Creek near the Skull Creek Major Bridge.

Police said the incident occurred at 11.40pm.

Emergency Services attended, however, the woman was declared deceased.

Major Crash detectives are investigating the incident.

The Katherine region town is on the Victoria River and borders Gregory National Park, 600km southwest of Darwin.

Police spent the early hours of the morning directing traffic away from the crash site.

INITIAL JAN 7, 7AM: MOTORISTS have been warned to expect delays after an incident on the Victoria Highway, 600km southwest of Darwin.

NT Police said that traffic diversions were in place 40 km east of Timber Creek, following an overnight incident.

The incident was near the Skull Creek Major Bridge.

Motorists were advised to expect delays through the morning because of the active traffic management in the area.
