NT POLICE will appear before the Liquor Commission today to weigh in on Woolworths’ application to open a Dan Murphy’s alcohol super store in Darwin.

The commission is sitting in the Supreme Court to hear arguments on whether the supermarket giant should be able to transfer an existing licence from Stuart Park to the site of the planned new grog barn.

In the final day of hearings, Darwin Commander Travis Wurst will answer questions from lawyers acting for Woolworths subsidiary Endeavour Drinks as well as counsel for a number of objectors.

The hearings, which began last week, have heard the new Dan Murphy’s could save Top End drinkers up to $4 million.

But those opposed to the application say the social harms caused by cheap booze will outweigh the advantages.

The commission is expected to hand down its decision at a later date.
