NT Police Assistant Commissioner Dr Narelle Beer has tendered her resignation, adding to the force’s internal management woes.

Dr Beer is the third of the NT Police‘s executive leadership team to resign in the last 12 months.

It comes as a damning new satisfaction survey reveals more than 70 per cent of Territory cops are unhappy with the direction of the agency and believe the leadership of the force is responsible for the exodus of staff.

Dr Beer was appointed to the role of Assistant Commissioner Regional Operations in September 2018.

Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker gave credit to Dr Beer for her work in her “difficult role”.

“We wish her very very well,” Commissioner Chalker said.

“Three years as an assistant commissioner in regional operations based in Alice Springs - I can speak from experience that it is a extremely challenging and difficult role and certainly the last three years - in that location and the circumstances that have had been dealt with - have been very, very significant and attracted much attention.

“So all credit to her for her efforts to this day. I understand she’s got another role to go to, and I wish you all the very best into the future.

Commissioner Chalker said the resignation was yet to be formalised.

NT Police Association (NTPA) president Paul McCue said Dr Beer had advised she was resigning as a member of the union as a result of her resignation from NT Police.

“She has thanked the NTPA for support to herself and the membership during her time as a member of the NT Police Force,” Mr McCue said.

Dr Beer started out with Victoria Police, and had accrued over 30 years policing experience.

Her previous roles included Divisional Commander, Local Area Commander and Manager Professional Standards Command.

Dr Beer completed her Doctorate of Police Leadership from Charles Sturt University, graduating in May 2020. Her doctorate thesis was entitled “Police corruption may be inevitable, but is it foreseeable?”.

Dr Beer also holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Diploma in Law, Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership, Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Masters in Police Leadership and Management.
