Multiple NT Police and emergency services vehicles descended on the Darwin Local Court after an employee at the courthouse died on site after a medical episode.
Police initially confirmed a person had died in non-suspicious circumstances at the CBD courthouse after midday on Friday, September 13.
The person is understood to have died during the court lunch break.
The commotion caused pedestrians and people milling outside the courthouse to stop and watch on as emergency services arrived and conducted their work.
People were seen peering through the glass doors as medical crews walked in and out of the building.
Local social media personality The Mango Inquirer – who had been livestreaming the incident from outside the building – was told to stop filming due to it being a “private medical emergency”.
The court was closed for the rest of the day.
In an official statement, an NT Courts spokesman confirmed a member of the court’s staff had died on site.
“Today (Friday) in the afternoon a person who works with the courts suffered a medical episode at the Darwin Local Court,” the spokesman said.
“Unfortunately they passed way and the building had to be closed to ensure the public were not present while the body was transported away.
“Court proceedings due to be heard today that were ultimately not heard because of the incident have been adjourned until Monday.”
